ADVENTURES IN SAN BLAS

Our family traveled to the San Blas Islands on Friday for two District Conferences. These are a group of islands of indigenous people (Kuna or Cuna Indians) off the northern Carribbean coast of Panama. These were not district conferences for the mission, but for a district of the church, which is smaller than a Stake (kind of like the difference between a branch and a ward). El Presidente is basically the Stake President over all five districts in Panama in addition to being in charge of the mission. One conference was held in Playon Chico on Saturday (the chapel there is built out over the water) and one today in Nargana. There are currently 6 elders and 4 hermanas serving in San Blas.

Here is a video of one of the San Blas hermanas and our daughter practicing, "Soy un hijo de Dios," for the district conference in Nargana today. I might be a little biased, but I think it's awesome. Feel free to share it!

The missionaries in San Blas get to wear more casual footwear!

The Kuna are known for their Mola handiwork, like this scripture cover. You'll see many missionaries here wearing mola ties as well.

This boat is named El Capitan Moroni.

If you ever wondered what the Kuna language sounds like, you can listen here as a member translates President's talk from Spanish to Kuna.

  1. Thanks for the San Blas update! Our grandson is Elder Oakley serving in Caseres. I served on Ustupo, San Blas in 1968-70 as one of the first San Blas Elders among the Kuna. Your blog was great to see the progress of these great people.

    1. We have recently gone from 8 to 10 missionaries in San Blas and it looks like we may be adding 2 more soon. The people there are so beautiful and gracious!
